Korean conglomerates preparing for the untact era with blockchain

South Korean chaebol, or conglomerated corporations, have attracted the attention of various industry insiders by seeking out blockchain specialists. In particular, they are seeking out blockchain developers in finance and gaming.

Conglomerates are reportedly seeking out talented blockchain and IT specialists now at least through the end of this year. These specialists will likely develop solutions in ICT, AI, big data, cloud technology, and various blockchain applications.

CJ OliveNetworks, a Korean conglomerate involved widely in retail and hospitality, currently needs an engineer to perform R & D for their Digital Transformation Research Institute.

The DT Research center seeks to support businesses seeking to integrate blockchain technology into their operations. They facilitate businesses in upgrading to smart factories and digital copyright systems.

KT DS, a branch KT Group IT, one of Korea’s largest telecoms conglomerates, posted job openings for software developers. They will aid in the production of new code and audit existing code for blockchain projects currently underway. KT DS may have many blockchain projects in the works, however the Blockchain as a Service (BaaS) and local currency projects carry the most immediate importance.

KT already launched a local currency system called dairoam earlier this year. The system is meant to help local economies sustain themselves with richer rewards for users.

Industry and government adoption

Finance and games companies have shown interest in hiring blockchain specialists, as well.

Virtual asset management and custodial services have emerged as the top fields for banks for focus on this year. Already several Korean banks have announced their development of such services to be ready by next year.

Non-fungible tokens (NFT) have entered the sphere of gaming as viable stand-ins for in-game rewards and purchases. These blockchain-based tokens can be used to make micro transactions on a mobile gaming platform. Notably, the mobile gaming industry topped $68 billion in sales last year; analysts expect 2020 sales to crush that line thanks to forced self-quarantines in line with Coronavirus prevention models.

Neowiz and Wemade, two gaming companies listed on KOSDAQ have open positions for blockchain game developers. They need dedicated engineers to operate their existing blockchain services, or to oversee the launch of future services.

The open positions come only shortly after the Korean government announced a tremendous $110 million support commitment to the growth of the blockchain development projects through 2025.

Recently lawmakers in Korea called for the untact culture to grow and become the new normal as COVID-19 grips the globe in pandemic fear. Lawmakers acknowledge that blockchain technology features a native benefit in facilitating non-face-to-face meetings as the untact culture takes further hold over that new norm.
